Amazing Alumni
Becky Waite, Head Keeper at Paradise Park
Becky studied the diploma and HND Animal Management courses at Duhcy College Rosewarne over 20 years ago and went straight to work for Paradise Park after completing her work experience there at college. For 15 years Becky has been a Head Keeper and recently has been in the forefront of Paradise Park’s social media after hand rearing their first flamingo chick, Derek, last year.
“The best thing about my role is breeding the birds, it gives me such joy knowing that a species is happy and healthy enough to breed. We have 11 adult flamingos and now Derek who I looked after at my home for a month until she was able to integrate into the group.”
Realising just how important work experience is for a student, Becky is now really passionate about helping the work experience students from college at Paradise Park start their own career journeys.
“Doing work experience was fundamental for me as it changed my outlook and has provided me with my career since, I can easily say that this is my dream job!”

Debbie Walsh
Lecturer in Animal Management & Owner of Tavistock Pet Emporium
“I completed my BSc (Hons) in Rural Resource Development at Writtle University College specialising in Alternative Farm Enterprise before completing my PGCE at Cardiff University.”
“Following this I was an Autistic specialist teacher at various schools in Hampshire and Devon before deciding on a change of direction and buying Tavistock Pet Emporium an independent pet retail outlet which I still own and run now.”
“I really missed teaching and helping students achieve their full potential so when the opportunity arose to teach part time at Duchy College I jumped at the chance. I now have the best of both worlds I get to teach about my favourite subject – Animals!!”
